Keeping Edmonton Moving: Concrete Cutting & Trench Demolition at ETS Centennial Garage
At Downright Demolition, safety, precision, and efficiency are at the heart of every project we take on. This summer, our team has partnered with Stanley Construction to carry out a specialized commercial demolition focusing on selective concrete demolition for trench repairs at one of Edmonton’s most vital transit hubs: the Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) Centennial Garage.
About the ETS Centennial Garage
Located at 15520 Ellerslie Road SW, the ETS Centennial Garage is Edmonton’s largest transit facility, spanning 300,000 sq. ft. and housing over 300 buses. This garage is more than just a building—it is a lifeline that keeps communities connected, serving neighbourhoods across west, southwest, and downtown Edmonton. Opened as the first new garage in the city, it plays a crucial role in ensuring public transit runs smoothly for thousands of Edmontonians every day.
Project Scope: Selective Concrete Demolition for Trench Repairs
The selective demolition project, which began on July 9th and is scheduled to finish by mid-fall, is extensive and highly technical. Our Downright Demolition team is working on the following scope:
- Saw cutting and removal of approximately 745 linear feet of concrete at a depth of 6 inches to open trench areas for repair.
- Demolition of 545 sq. ft. of concrete at a depth of 6 inches, added to the original scope.
- Multiple mobilizations and bins included to handle the phased nature of the work.
- Evening and weekend work included, as required, to minimize disruption to facility operations.
- All concrete disposal included, ensuring a clean and safe work environment.
This scope ensures trench areas are properly exposed and ready for repair while protecting the surrounding structure and allowing ongoing garage operations to continue safely.
Challenges of the Work
Demolition inside a high-capacity transit garage presents unique challenges, and this project has been no exception:
- Operational Facility – With many buses using the garage, all work had to be planned to minimize disruption to daily operations.
- Precision Cutting – Removing specific sections of concrete up to 9 inches deep without damaging adjacent slabs or infrastructure required expertise and specialized equipment.
- Multiple Mobilizations – Coordinating several phases of work required efficient scheduling and communication with Stanley Construction.
Through these challenges, our safety-first approach and proven processes have kept the project on track.
Impact of the Work
The trench repairs made possible through this demolition will have a lasting impact on the garage and its operations. By addressing key infrastructure needs, the ETS Centennial Garage will be better equipped to maintain and service its fleet of buses for years to come. This means:
- Improved Efficiency – Reliable trench systems help ensure maintenance workflows stay safe and uninterrupted.
- Increased Longevity – High-quality repairs extend the lifespan of the facility, protecting the City’s investment in transit infrastructure.
- Community Benefits – With a more resilient garage, Edmontonians can count on dependable bus services across major parts of the city.
